What are the symptoms and signs of swallowing disorder?

Various diseases or surgical attempt can cause for swallowing disorder. Common symptoms include:

  • Coughing during or immediately after eating or drinking
  • Making noise while swallowing during or immediately after eating or drinking
  • Spending extra effort during chewing and swallowing
  • Having jamming of food or liquids in the mouth
  • Repetitive pneumonia after eating food or breast obstruction
  • Weight loss due to not eating enough and dehydration

 

As a result in adults;

  • Bad nutrition or dehydration
  • Risk of aspiration (food or liquid entering the airway) leading to pneumonia and chronic lung disease
  • Not having appetite in eating or drinking
  • Embarrassment and frustration occurs in the dining social environment
